What do you need from us?
We're consultants before we're coders. Every engagement starts with the problem you're facing and the outcome you're after — not our favourite framework. Below: four ways to engage us, the terms they all come on, and seven areas where our experience is genuinely deep.
Four ways to engage us
Rescue, troubleshooting & acceleration
The call we most enjoyA project that's stuck. A bug no one can crack. A deadline slipping away. We diagnose fast, fix the "impossible", unblock the team, and give the project the boost it needs.
Decades of walking into other people's codebases mid-flight means we're just as often called in to fix the thing everyone else has given up on as to build from a blank page.
Rapid builds
Idea to working software in days, not quarters — a prototype, an MVP, or a full product. No ceremony, no backlog theatre: two senior builders and AI tooling working straight through to something you can ship. We build it, put it in front of real use, and refine from evidence.
Fractional CTO & AI advisory
Ongoing senior technical leadership at a fraction of a full-time hire: architecture, AI strategy, tooling, process, hiring and mentoring. Standing in as senior technical leadership for founders, or levelling up an existing team's delivery. Also technical due diligence, and the senior judgement to know what's worth building at all.
SDKs & platform work
Reusable SDKs, white-label apps and platform components — an area both principals have shipped repeatedly, including a ticketing SDK for the French rail network and OneM2M and white-label SDKs for a UK transport-data platform.
What you get, whichever way we engage
The commercial partA demo every single week
Working software from the first week, not a status report about working software. You see it running, you tell us what's wrong with it, and that goes into the next week. Nothing accumulates out of sight until a reveal at the end — which is how a project gets three months in before anyone finds out it's heading the wrong way.
Senior engineers only
The two people you talk to are the two people who write the code. No bait-and-switch where a senior wins the work and a junior does it — there is nobody more junior here to hand it to, which is the point of keeping the practice at two.
You own the code and the IP
All of it, from day one. Not on final payment, and not licensed back to you from us. It goes into your repository under your account, and it stays yours whether the engagement runs a fortnight or a year — if we stopped tomorrow you'd have everything, with nothing to untangle.
Our specialities
Seven areasThree capabilities we build with
- Native Mobile
- Back End & Platform
- AI Systems
combine inside
Three domains we know deeply
- FinTech & Regulated
- Media & Video
- Robotics & IoT
and reach a market through
- Product Commercialisation
Which is why a mobile engagement here doesn't stop at the client.
Native Mobile — Apple & Android
End-to-end iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS and macOS, plus native Android — so we cover both major platforms in-house, from greenfield builds to modernising legacy code and shipping to the App Store and Play Store.
Back End & Platform Engineering
The services behind the apps, not just the apps: microservices and RESTful APIs, event streaming, caching and the data layer. Both principals work on both sides of the wire, which is why a mobile engagement here doesn't stop at the client.
AI Systems & LLM Integration
Building AI into products: LLM-powered features, recommendation engines, computer vision, agentic workflows and on-device ML — plus the cloud systems that keep them reliable in production. Led by an MSc-qualified practitioner who has shipped these in a live product.
Robotics, IoT & Embedded
Connected devices, sensors and control systems, including IoT platforms built to OneM2M standards and hands-on robotics work — bridging hardware and polished mobile front-ends.
FinTech, Gambling & Regulated Apps
Banking, payments, gambling and security-critical apps: PCI-DSS, chip-and-PIN, Auth0, secure messaging, real-money transactions and regulatory compliance. Delivered for clients including Lloyds Banking Group, a Santander FinTech and BlackBerry.
Media & Video Streaming
Streaming and content apps across phone, tablet and TV — HLS, transcoding, direct play and cross-device sync. Spanning TVPlayer, ITV Hub+ and modern AI video platforms.
Product Commercialisation & Go-to-Market
Taking products to market, not just building them: channel and reseller strategy, payments partnerships and international sales — from a founder who has built and sold a software company.
Who we work with
We keep the practice small — but the range is broad.
- Founders & startups — who need a credible product shipped fast, and often a fractional CTO to make the early architecture, commercial and hiring calls.
- Scale-ups & enterprise — adding AI to existing products, modernising ageing mobile codebases, or bringing in senior firepower for a defined, high-stakes build.
- Regulated & security-critical clients — in finance, payments and communications, where PCI-DSS, secure messaging and audited delivery matter.
- Hardware & connected-device teams — building IoT or robotics products that need equally strong mobile and AI front-ends.
How we think about it
The idea comes first, not the code
Every engagement starts with your problem and the outcome you're after. The job is to turn an idea into something real that works for the people who'll use it; the technology is just how we get there.

Senior over many
Writing code is no longer the expensive part. We put senior engineers plus AI tooling against problems that once needed a full team, cutting cost and coordination overhead without cutting the quality of judgement.

Ship, then iterate
We build working software fast, put it in front of real use, and refine from evidence rather than from opinion.

Right-sized rigour
We match discipline to the stakes. Throwaway internal tools get built and rebuilt cheaply; regulated FinTech and payments systems get the full weight of security, testing and architecture they demand. Knowing which is which is the expertise.

Expert users of AI, not sellers of hype
We're fluent at putting algorithms, LLMs and neural networks to work in real products — and we're candid about what actually works, from doing it rather than from reading about it.

Crypto, without the evangelism
We can walk you through the minefield of crypto and get the right infrastructure and services. No mess, no fuss and no hype.
Working with us
Before you emailDo you work alongside our existing team, or replace it?
Alongside, nearly always. Most engagements have meant slotting into a team that already exists and already has its own way of working — covering the ITV Hub+ app through a permanent-hire gap, working next to an in-house iOS team at Fanatix, mentoring developers at Tesco and Tignum, and at Hotels.com passing technical knowledge across to the Mobile Web, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows teams.
We're used to working with your designers, your server team, your product owner and your QA rather than around them. If what you need instead is a self-contained build handed back finished, that works too — say which you want.
Will you take on a codebase someone else wrote?
Yes, and it's the most common way we start. Decades of walking into other people's code mid-flight means we're just as often called in to fix what everyone else has given up on as to build from a blank page — restructuring the TVPlayer iOS and tvOS apps, rewriting a Lloyds banking codebase for two project teams, resolving critical memory and JSON faults in a property viewer, and inheriting the Vox Cinema apps and then maintaining and developing them for two years.
What you'll hear from a lot of developers and agencies is that the codebase is a mess, that the answer is to rewrite it, and that the new one will be better. We wish that were true. Usually a rewrite just moves the same problems further down the line — the decisions that made the old code awkward get made again, under deadline pressure, by people who weren't there the first time. Two years later someone is saying the same thing about the replacement.
Sometimes a rewrite genuinely is the right call, and we'll tell you when it is. But it's the most expensive option on the table, so it should have to earn that — which means understanding what is actually wrong before anyone reaches for a blank page.
You don't need to tidy it up first. Seeing it as it actually is tells us more than seeing it cleaned up for us.
How long does an engagement run?
From a few days to as long as you want. TVApp — a cross-platform media client for tvOS, iPad, macOS and Android — was built and shipped in ten days. A storybook app for a children's charity was twelve weeks. TVPlayer ran ten months, BlackBerry twelve, and leading the mobile division at dnata Travel and Travel Republic ran eighteen months across three extensions. The Vox Cinema apps ran longest of all: two years of continuous support and development on a codebase we inherited.
The shape follows the problem rather than a standard package. A diagnosis on a stuck project can be a few days; standing in as technical leadership is ongoing by nature.
Is it really just the two of you?
Yes, and that's the point rather than a limitation. We don't sell headcount. The premise of the practice is that two deeply experienced people with modern AI tooling now deliver what used to take a squad — so the people you talk to are the people doing the work, and nothing is passed down to someone more junior once the contract is signed.
Where a project genuinely needs more hands, we'll help you source them, and hiring is something we do rather than something we hand off — we've sifted funnels of a thousand applicants and know what a good mid-level engineer looks like on paper and in a room.
Leaving a competent team behind is often how an engagement ends. On Travel Republic the client's own account is that the project landed on time and then the foundations were built for the team now running it; at Hotels.com, twelve months in, the ask changed from building the iPad app to organising and managing the entire mobile division. The aim is that you don't need us indefinitely.
It does mean we take on a small number of engagements at a time. If we can't do yours properly, we'd rather say so than stretch.
Do you cover Android as well as Apple?
Both, in-house, natively. Dominic's depth is on Apple platforms — iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS and macOS since iOS 3 — and Alex is expert on native Android and iOS, including running split codebases across both. TVApp is SwiftUI on Apple and Kotlin on Android, not a cross-platform shortcut.
What if the problem isn't a mobile app at all?
Then it's probably still in range. We work on both sides of the wire — microservices, RESTful APIs, event streaming, caching and the data layer — as well as AI systems and LLM integration, robotics, IoT and embedded work, and taking a finished product to market. The capability map above is the honest version of what we're deep in; if your problem sits outside it, we'll tell you rather than learn on your budget.
What do you need from us to get started?
A conversation, before anything else — a chance to understand the problem properly, and to find out how you want us to work. Some teams want us in their standups and their repo from day one; others would rather be left alone until there is something to look at. Both are fine, but we would rather ask than assume.
What we don't insist on is an upfront specification. If you don't have one, it doesn't matter — we're used to working with ideas and turning them into reality.
Ownership and staffing are answered above, under what you get whichever way we engage. Rates, contract form and notice are better answered against your actual situation than in the abstract — ask us directly. Looking for help with one of our own apps instead? That's on the support page.
